Dutel Traditional Homes

About Us

Dutel Traditional Homes both restores old homes and builds new ones in traditional styles. Many New Orleans homes have stood for over a hundred or even two hundred years because they were built with expertise and quality materials. Dutel believes in continuing these traditions of craftsmanship and quality.

Whether our clients ask us to use new building materials or materials recycled from carefully "deconstructed" properties, Dutel completes its work with a focus on durability, historical preservation, and skill. We also pride ourselves on being in frequent communication with our clients throughout the renovation or construction process.

Biographies

Thomas Dutel
Thomas Dutel named his company Dutel Traditional Homes because he considers his renovation and construction projects linked to New Orleans' architectural traditions. Although he is a licensed general contractor and has been building homes for 15 years, he doesn't think of himself as just a contractor. Instead, he is a developer of homes that continue the Crescent City's beloved heritage and a project manager with an environmental and historical conscience.

A New Orleans native, Dutel received his education from De La Salle High School and the University of New Orleans. He started his career in the real estate title business, a profession which drew out his interest in the beauty and history of New Orleans homes. Deciding he wanted to work with local properties directly and not just on paper, he made the transition into general contracting. Dutel looks to keep the city's architectural legacy alive by using materials recovered from demolitions and deconstructed houses and by using remilled wood for mantels, bookcases, floors, and the like.

In the 1990s, Dutel developed the environmentally sensitive Chinchuba properties on the Northshore. More recently, he has completed a renovation as part of the Operation Helping Hands project through the Archdiocese of New and has been redeveloping a historic neighborhood near the medical district. Dutel is a member of the St. Tammany Home Builders Association of Greater New Orleans which has certified him as a Qualified Remodeler.
